GMI Supports 560 Smallholder Farmers Across Nasarawa State
Gumsu Empowerment Initiative (GMI) has made significant strides in improving food security across Nasarawa State, reaching 560 smallholder farmers through its Agriculture and Food Security program.
Program Highlights
The program distributed improved seed varieties and farming input kits to 420 farming households, complemented by hands-on training in modern farming techniques, soil management, and post-harvest handling. Participating farmers reported an average crop yield increase of 38% compared to the previous season.
Women Farmers at the Centre
A deliberate focus on women farmers ensured that 62% of beneficiaries were women, recognizing their central role in household food production and nutrition. Women farmers also received additional training on food processing and value addition to reduce post-harvest losses.
Market Linkages
GMI facilitated connections between farmers and local markets, cooperatives, and agro-processors, enabling beneficiaries to sell surplus produce at fair prices. This market linkage component has been identified as a key driver of income improvement among participating households.
Looking Forward
GMI plans to expand the program to additional LGAs in Nasarawa State in the next cycle, with a focus on irrigation support and climate-smart agriculture techniques. Partners and donors interested in supporting this initiative are encouraged to reach out.
